Steam runs four Steam-wide seasonal sales a year — Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. These are the big ones: any game released at least 30 days beforehand can take part, so most of the catalogue is discounted at once. The Summer and Winter sales are the longest, usually running about two weeks.
Themed fests run most weeks and spotlight a single category — Racing, Cooking, Real-Time Strategy. Discounts are limited to games that fit the theme, so a fest is not a substitute for a seasonal sale. Steam Next Fest, three times a year, is a demo showcase for unreleased games rather than a discount event.
Dates come from Valve's published schedule for developers and are updated daily. Seasonal sales have historically started and ended at 10:00 AM Pacific; Valve publishes the dates but not the times, so the countdown above assumes that hour.
